Very well organized and informative. I have taken Hartman personality tests and similar things before but this was most functional to apply to everyday life. – J.D.

Leading From Your Strengths

  • What gives you energy?
  • What drains your energy?
  • What are you drawn to?
  • What makes you happy?
  • What fulfills you?
  • What are you passionate about?

Are you happy with what you’re doing?
Most people are not happy doing what they are doing. Women today are less happy and less fulfilled than they were 40 years ago. When you do something that comes naturally to you, it’s not difficult because you are using your strengths. It is enjoyable and it actually gives you energy.

Think about something that you love to do – how do you feel when you’re doing it?
Do you feel energized? Now think about something that you really do not enjoy – how do you feel when you’re doing it? Do you feel drained by the end of it? Does it zap you of your energy? You are not using your strengths. You are doing something that doesn’t come naturally to you – it doesn’t give you joy. You may be able to do it, but there is nothing fulfilling about it.

We all have strengths!
The Leading From Your Strengths assessment that I use in my workshops and with clients is a strength based assessment; we refer to your strengths as your natural behavioral style. We may not even be aware of what makes us happy or what frustrates us. Managers and supervisors sometimes ask us to focus more energy and time on our weak areas. Why do that when it would only frustrate us? There are simply some areas in our lives we’ll never be good at – they are not our strengths – so why focus on them? Let someone else do those – someone who has those strengths. If everyone on a team completed a strength based assessment, discovered and used their strengths, everyone would enjoy what they’re doing, be energized, do a good job and the work would be completed faster and more efficiently, with less frustration and less conflict. Everyone would feel a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment and be energized.

Take a look at the animals around us.
A fish will never be good at climbing trees, no matter how much he tries, no matter how much energy and effort he puts into it! A fish operates from his natural behavioral style – his strengths. Trying to do something outside of his strengths doesn’t even enter his mind! He is totally content with his swimming ability …with his natural strengths.

When you discover your strengths, you’ll discover who you are!
You’ll accept who you are. You may have thought that you want more balance in your life, but knowing your strengths will make you want to focus on what invigorates you. Life doesn’t have to be balanced – it needs to be enjoyed!

Personal Journey
When I first completed the Leading From Your Strengths assessment, I found it very easy to understand because of the association with the animals: Lion, Otter, Golden Retriever and Beaver. A lot of research went into assigning the animals to the behavioral styles (or personality types). I grew up not knowing anything about myself or my strengths. My parents obviously didn’t either. They were mainly focused on trying to manage the stress in their lives and surviving. Nourishing children emotionally and mentally was not something they were familiar with. As a result, I grew up with low self-esteem and no self-confidence. I didn’t know who I was; I was extremely shy as a child and when I went to school I felt invisible. My parents didn’t know how to encourage me in any way. I just existed.

It has taken me years of hard personal development to gain self-esteem and self-confidence. That’s why I was so excited when I discovered this strength based assessment. It made so much sense to me. Because of my own experience growing up, my first response was, “Kids need to know this stuff.” I learned about my strengths much later in life – not as a child. It is never too late to learn about ourselves. Once we have a good idea about what our strengths are – what our natural tendencies are – what our behavioral styles are – it will simplify life for us. It will help us to know what kind of career or profession to choose. It will help us to recognize what kind of environment we enjoy. We’ll understand why we don’t want to cook a turkey dinner, or why we’d rather offer to bring dessert to someone else’s place. We will know what causes stress – what drains us of our energy. We’ll know what creates energy in our lives and gives us joy. We’ll have a better understanding of where to put our attention.

It helps to know the strengths of others
If knowing our own strengths helps us to understand ourselves better, then knowing the strengths of others will make life easier as well. Sometimes our expectations are unrealistic because we don’t know what the other person is good at – what their strengths are. If you recognize that someone does not have certain strengths, you can accept that and appreciate the strengths he does have. You can work together, each of you using your strengths to complement each other. You’ll learn how to appreciate and respect others for what they have to offer. Time for celebration!

By taking a strength based assessment and identifying your strengths and passions, you can then spend the majority of your time doing what you excel at and what you enjoy. You can put yourself first in a healthy way and live a fulfilling and energized life.
